Summer in Minnesota means access to water.  Lakes and public pools are open for the season and open to all of us.   And, as temperatures rise, exercising in the water is a “cool” option.

Swimming is a great way to stay in shape or get in shape. It’s an activity that is enjoyed by people of all ages and is good for both your mental and physical health.  A few of the many benefits of a good swim include:
Better endurance and more strength
Increased heart rate without high impact
Improved flexibility and balance
Reduced stress
If you’re not a swimmer you can still enjoy the water, cool down, and get many of the same benefits. Most exercises you can do on land can be converted to a water workout.  You might try:
Water aerobics
Deep water running or walking
Arm reaches and shoulder flexes
Leg raises
All of these options offer resistance in all directions without stressing load-bearing joints.

With so much upside – there’s little reason to avoid the water this summer.
