Daphne Tumaneng was born and raised by a small, close-knit family of health professionals, who immigrated from the Philippines to Flint, Michigan. She attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where she received a bachelor’s degree in biology. She then entered medical school at Midwestern University-Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, with the intent of following her father’s footsteps in family practice.
However, her student rotation in OB-GYN allowed her to witness the dual aspects of the specialty- its highly surgical nature and its emphasis on preventive care-along with the ability to care for patients throughout their reproductive lives. Invigorated by the opportunity to work with this special population, she refocused her interests on women’s health. Dr. Tumaneng completed a rotating internship at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago and returned to Michigan to complete her OB-GYN residency at Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn. She practiced in one of metro Detroit’s largest hospital systems before moving to the Twin Cities.
Dr. Tumaneng relishes the opportunity to educate and treat patients throughout the different stages of life, comprehensively and from a reproductive standpoint. “Since my time as a health aide with Planned Parenthood to my final vocation as a physician, I have always enjoyed meeting with a patient, listening to her concerns, and working with her to find a solution to her problems,” she says. Dr. Tumaneng’s clinical interests include preventive healthcare for adolescents to mature women, preconception care and family planning, minimally invasive surgical procedures and general obstetrics.
Daphne and her husband Steven have been married since 2003. They and their only dog Oskar live in St. Paul. They enjoy traveling abroad and spending as much time outdoors as a Midwestern climate can permit; they love camping, hiking, boating and also cycling. They also consider themselves amateur foodies and enjoy a good night out on the town. Dr. Tumaneng credits her family for keeping life balanced; “my husband brings me out of ‘medicine mode’ and gives me a well rounded outlook, which in turn makes me a better physician.”
